Statement
Watson’s theory behind his self-directed and
drawing projects are centred on death and how people once had personalities, things that
they loved and hated, they had emotions and perceptions. He wants to show that everybody once had lives
but when people are dead they are forgotten, long gone however the living move
forward with their lives. Death was chosen as his starting point as it is
something that is all around us, it is in the media but it is rarely discussed
especially in everyday life. Death affects everyone directly and indirectly,
people decide to deal with the issue of death in different ways as each
person is different. This is what Watson is trying to portray, peoples
reactions upon seeing his work, weather its despair or hurt every time somebody
sees his piece the mood will change. He is trying to get people to look at
death and show them that it is all around, it is nature and this has
been happening for thousands of years.
His main influences are not artists but song lyrics
mainly from The Smiths as it addresses death and music is involved in everyday
society. He progressed from looking at lyrics by looking at the Charnel Houses
as they portray death. He combines the two as he mixes the lyrics from The
Smiths, with the skull representation from the Charnel Houses. By collaborating them together he wants the audience to understand the thought and information behind
his piece by reading the lyrics as they are informative and the skulls portray what the
lyrics say.
The media he
uses are inspired by his influences as he uses bibles to represent the Charnel
Houses, it is used to also get a reaction as some people find the destruction
of a bible disguising. Furthermore he chose the photos as it is
from the Victorian Era, a part of a long elapsed history and he has edited the photos
by using pen to drew skulls as it depicts death.
