David Bomberg
He
was a British artist, whose style is sharp with clear-cut disjointed forms but
tries to portray emotion in his drawings. He started to draw abstract but then
later went into expressionism however he understood cubism and futurism. He was
a daring painter and this is what got him expelled from the Slade, later in
life he began teaching influencing artists such as Auerbach and Kossoff.
Jeanette Barnes
She
to is a British artist, who studied her BA in Fine Art at Liverpool,
post-graduate at Royal Academy and MA print at Royal College and later went on
to teach drawing at the Royal Academy of Arts Outreach programme,
the Prince’s Drawing School. She sketches outside small then works back in the
studio big, her work gets commissioned and has been displayed in the Royal
Academy Summer Show.
General Information
·
During Bombergs time there was WWI and
WWII happening, this affected his mentality and attitudes towards art; it changed
his confidence in the old techniques of art. He drew inspiration from the war
as he painted the city in the blitz however it was hard for him to get a job
afterwards– for Barnes there was no wars that affected her work
·
They both were and are well travelled, drew
while traveling and have found that the different cultures and way of living
interesting
·
Bomberg was highly regarded after his
death especially at the Slade as he understood old techniques and for being
bold, but throughout his life his art was ignored– Barnes has recently started to
get recognised and has been awarded scholarships and is respected by architects
·
Bomberg work show the black and miserable
life of the past whereas Barnes shows the fast pace of living and upcoming
cities
·
Over the years technology has advanced which
would have had an impact on each artists techniques and way of life
·
The money for arts has improved with time
Similar
·
Theme – they are both cityscapes and the
buildings can clearly be seen in both images, including the large prominent
structures it is the focal point and both have a feeling that the viewer is
looking down on the city
-
But due to the time that Bomberg drew,
there were more empty streets, beggars and working people this is seen through
the emptiness of the drawing, the limited lines. This is different compared to modern
times where there is people with leisure time who can walk the street with ease
yet people are in a rush this is expressed through the lines of Barnes drawing
·
Dominant lines, marks and layers – the lines
are one of the main parts of each drawings they use the lines to build up the
images, the straight lines are the central point and the curve lines are still
visible but not as prominent
·
Both use the media charcoal – they both
use charcoal as their chosen media as it is easily assessable and loose to work
with and can create different tones and thickness
-
Bomberg
shades and smudges in his image filling the page with some shade of grey
whereas Barnes uses lines to fill the page
·
No colour, dark – they both don’t include
any colour making them quite gloomy and they use different tones to create a 3D
image instead of the use of colour. Due to them both having no colour the
audience can get the same or similar feelings and reactions from the pieces
Differences
·
Construction – Barnes shows the rise of a
city with construction, the skyscrapers, buildings and busy roads whereas
Bomberg there was minimal construction, the city was recovering after the war
so it shows just the basic shell of the city. The viewer can see the modern
elements compared to the old, and see how buildings have changed over the years
·
Size of image – Bomberg works almost
three times as small compared to Barnes. Barnes work will have more intensity
due to the scale but due to the darkness and lines Bombergs work captures more
of a feeling than a dominance
·
Detail -
In Barnes drawing there is some degree of detail that is built up of
lines as the viewer is able to see windows and roads whereas in Bombergs
drawings it is just the outline of the buildings, his drawings is more of a
quick sketch
