Barry Underwood.

Barry Underwood

(Self Directed)

He uses the land as a canvas for his photography, the urban and suburban as it creates the community. He researches where he is going to work so that he can understand and get a feel for the place. He wants to make the viewer see something special within the ordinariness of a landscape, it can be transformed. He is inspired by land art, land photography and paints, he wants to reveal the surreal and the familiar.

What interested me about Underwood is that he uses the environment around him as a canvas for his work. He may not alter the landscape drastically but the viewer can see that something is not right and doesn’t belong. As he uses light in woodland it creates a magical feeling such as Alice in Wonderland as the light is subtle and is working with the trees not against them and they have their own place of belonging, the trees are not sucking them in. The way he positions the lights makes the viewers eyes follow them across the page but managing to capture most of the aspects of the surrounding as well. It has made me understand that the light does not have to be dominant, that it can work within the environment even when I have placed it there.
